  • Ph.D. from: I have completed my PhD from Symbiosis International University, Pune, India.- My last position: Before joining UCT, I was working as a Research Associate at National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, India.
  •  My former collaborations: During the course of my Ph.D. I had undergone training at the Department of Infectious and tropical diseases, University Hospital Grenoble, France. An extension of my PhD work was in collaboration with King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and University College London, UK.
  •  My scientific highlights: My doctoral work was focused on evaluating the influence of mass gathering events on ecology and public health. It was the first study using the changes in the microbial communities as a proxy to quantify the potential risks. It further gained importance as a based study during the course of COVID-related lockdown to derive the ecological restorations, if any.
  •  My achievements, awards: I am a recipient of various travel grants and conference attendance grants of premier institutions like
    • Federation of European Microbiological Societies and Society for Applied Microbiology, UK
    • European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Switzerland.
    • Science and Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB), India.
    • Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.
    • International Society for Microbial Ecology (in India), The Netherlands.

Scientific specialization & research interest at UCT

  • I am currently studying microbial communities thriving at extremes of life by using bioinformatics. In particular, we analyze the microbes at the level of communities (amplicon/metagenomics) and individual microbes (whole genome) to deduce their surviving mechanism. Additionally, it would be later exploited to derive industrially important bioactive compounds. E.g. The most famous bioactive compound derived from the extremophiles is TaqPolymerase, - a heat-stable enzyme that has revolutionized the field of molecular biology.

Type of collaborations I am looking for

  • I always eagerly look forward to having discussions to develop an inter/trans-disciplinary project. I strongly believe that discussion leads to criticism/curiosities which opens a new arena that has not yet been explored. Having said that, biology and chemistry always go hand in hand so I would be look forward to some collaborations in chemistry which will enable technological advancement to better understand biology.
  • Finally, my favorite Czech phrase to open up discussions "mam rad pivo :D"

Scientific specialization & research interest at UCT

  • Environmental protection and clean enerygy production are two of the major problems facing the world today. Photocatalytic processes that utilize free energy from the sun and recycle waste CO2 are promising to solve these problems. To achieve this goal, efficient catalysts are needed. My current research focuses on the synthesis and nanostructure engineering of metal oxide catalysts and their composites for visible light driven water splitting and CO2 reduction. I also specialize in the design, characterization and investigation of structure-function relationship in 3-D porous materials for CO2 capture and enzyme immobilization.

Type of collaborations I am looking for

  • Catalyst characterization (Ultraviolet–vis diffuse reflectance spectrometer, HPLC, GC-MS, Photoluminescence spectrofluorometer)
  • Photocatalytic CO2 reduction, water splitting and hydrogenation reactions
  • Enzyme immobilization and activity testing
